The Kilter Board

A climber is in the middle of climbing up the Kilter Board, a black wall with grey holds. Some of the holds are lit blue and green with LED's.

Want to learn how to use our Kilter Board?

Anyone can use it, and we’ll tell you how.

What Is A Kilter Board?

We are proud to have a Kilter Board at Evolution Boulders! The Kilter Board is a light-up climbing board that you control with your phone. Anyone (it’s free!) can access a worldwide database of boulder problems with the Kilter Board App, or create their own to share with other climbers. The board uses holds lit up with LED’s as well as a hydraulic system to let you climb at really low and steep angles (from 10 to 70 degrees).

The Kilter Board is great for training, having friendly competition with your climbing buddies, or having gym wide competitions. If you can climb a problem easily, try adjusting the angle of the board to up the intensity and challenge yourself! You can even make your own climbs and then share them worldwide on the app.

Here’s How To Get Started:

Kilter Board Hold Rules:

Green holds are start holds that become foot holds after starting. Yellow holds are foot holds only. Blue holds are hand and foot holds. Purple holds are the finish holds.

Safety And Considerate Climbing:

  • Be Respectful! Wait your turn to climb and don’t hog the wall.

  • Do not change the board angle if someone is currently using the board without asking first.

  • Keep the pad area clear of chalk bags, water bottles, and personal items to limit fall hazards.

  • NEVER change the angle of the board while people are on the board or on the pads.

  • NEVER go behind the Kilter Board.

  • If you have a safety concern regarding the Kilter Board itself or witness unsafe use by other climbers, immediately find the nearest staff member and let them know.

  • The safety of our members is our top priority. Unsafe use and behavior will result in being asked to leave the gym without a refund. This decision will be made at the discretion of the staff on duty.

  • Push the RED EMERGENCY STOP BUTTON on the wall mounted panel to stop wall movement at any time.

  • Be safe, be considerate of your fellow climbers, and have fun!

Hopefully this helps you feel confident enough to give the Kilter Board a try. It’s a really fun, versatile training tool.
